For a franchise that’s played all of four postseason games since joining the NHL in 1999, the Atlanta Thrashers faced a playoff-type contest on Saturday at Buffalo.
But in a painful reminder of how thin the line is between the haves and have-nots, the Thrashers totally blew an opportunity to thrust themselves back into the race for the Stanley Cup playoffs. (Read More…)

The Atlanta Thrashers’ slim hopes of making the NHL playoffs are just that. Slim.
But a few more wins like Saturday’s 4-3 overtime thriller over Florida at Philips Arena could ignite a much-needed late-season surge. (Read More…)

After an initial burst put them in a 2-0 hole, the Atlanta Thrashers fought back. As per the case so many times in his brilliant career, Ilya Kovalchuk led the charge.
The Thrashers’ sharpshooter scored twice, his first two-goal game since Nov. 13, and goals from rookie Evander Kane and Rich Peverley gave the Thrashers all the offense needed in a 4-3 victory over Toronto on Tuesday at Philips Arena.
With the victory, Atlanta moves into a tie for ninth with Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference standings with 51 points, one point behind the Islanders for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Toronto scored twice in a 32-second span of the first period, putting the Thrashers in a 2-0 hole just five minutes into the contest. But Ondrej Pavelec steadied himself in goal, and in the second period Atlanta rallied.
Kovalchuk started it with a goal at the 2:43 mark. Kane scored 10 minutes later to tie the game at 2-2. In the third, Peverley converted on a power play for the game-winner at 1:58, and Kovalchuk scored at the 4:20 mark.
Toronto would score again to cut the margin to one, but Pavelec and the Atlanta defense held up. Kovalchuk finished with the two goals and an assist.
The Thrashers play host to Carolina Thursday.

A furious rally at the finish couldn’t help the Atlanta Thrashers overcome yet another sluggish start.
A Gregory Campbell goal midway through the second period turned out to be the only score of the game, as the Thrashers fell to Southeast Division rival Florida on Monday, 1-0.
The loss drops Atlanta (21-20-7) three points behind the Islanders for the eighth and final playoff spot in the crowded Eastern Conference standings. With 49 points, Atlanta is tied with Philadelphia for 11th.
Johan Hedberg did his part between the pipes for Atlanta, making 23 saves. Campbell’s goal came at the 7:18 mark of the second period, and Hedberg’s vision was partially blocked on the play.
It’s unfortunate, as that would be the difference in part because the Thrashers once again struggled offensively in the early part of the game. The Thrashers mustered just 13 shots on goal combined in the first 40 minutes.
In the third, the Thrashers finally found their offensive rhythm enough to take 14 shots on goal and keep the pressure on Florida’s defense and goaltender Tomas Vokoun. But Vokoun was too tough, and Atlanta wasn’t able to capitalize on a 6-on-4 advantage in the final 1:19.
Atlanta looks to bounce back with a quick turnaround, taking on Toronto on Tuesday at Philips Arena.

For all their early-season success on the road, the Atlanta Thrashers have found some rough sledding away from Philips Arena.
Atlanta dropped to 1-2 on its current four-game road swing, losing 3-1 Wednesday night at Calgary in a game where the Thrashers couldn’t generate any offense.
Colby Armstrong scored his fourth goal of the season for Atlanta at the 12:27 mark of the third period, scoring off assists off Rich Peverley and Boris Valabik. Armstrong’s goal cut a 2-0 deficit in half, but Atlanta couldn’t draw any closer.
Following a scoreless first period, Calgary posted two goals in the second to grab a 2-0 advantage. Nigel Dawes beat Atlanta goaltender Johan Hedberg 2:09 into the second for the game’s first goal, and Olli Jokinen scored at the 14:28 mark.
Rene Bourque added an empty-net goal with 40 seconds left.
For the Thrashers, who started the season by winning eight of their first 11 road games, Wednesday’s loss followed an ugly 5-2 defeat Monday at Toronto. Atlanta opened the roadtrip with a shootout victory Saturday in Florida.
The Thrashers end the road trip Thursday at Vancouver. The game marks a homecoming for Evander Kane, the Thrashers’ first-round draft pick this season who hails from Vancouver.

Playing from an unfamiliar position early Thursday night, the Atlanta Thrashers ended up in an unfamiliar position.
Staked to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, the Thrashers couldn’t build on the quick start as Matt Moulson’s hat trick led the New York Islanders past Atlanta 4-1 at Philips Arena, ending the Thrashers’ three-game winning streak.
The Atlanta offense, averaging nearly 3.5 goals per game so far this season, got the Thrashers out to an early lead. Slava Kozlov scored his fifth, off assists from Bryan Little and Todd White at the 9:01 mark.
Used to playing from behind and starting slow, the Thrashers didn’t handle their reversal of fortune well. In the second, Moulson scored his first goal 1:47 into the period. He then broke the tie with a power play goal with four minutes left in the period.
The Thrashers couldn’t capitalize on a power play midway through the third, and shortly after the Isles killed off the power play, Moulson tipped in a shot to make it 3-1.
John Tavares scored an empty netter with one second left, as the Thrashers ended a three-game homestand on a down note.
Now Atlanta hits the road for a four-game swing, starting Saturday night at Florida. The Thrashers then play Monday at Toronto, Wednesday at Northwest Division leader Calgary, and Thursday at Vancouver.
